Dr. Thomas Serra brings over 30 years of chiropractic experience as the “Family Chiropractor” for thousands of Atlanta-area residents. He has operated a successful practice in Conyers since 1980. Dr. Serra is board certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE). He holds additional certifications in physiotherapy, acupuncture, Fascial Distortion Model (FDM) and Active Release Technique (ART) which, along with Graston Technique and LLLT (Cold Laser), allows him to address soft tissue injuries that lead to adhesions and nerve entrapments, including carpal tunnel and sciatica. Soft tissue therapy can also be used to treat a variety of conditions where over-used muscles have built up adhesions and/or scar tissue over time. It is an effective treatment for headaches, TMJ, plantar fasciitis, golf and tennis elbow, shoulder and knee “over-use” injuries, chronic pain and more.
Dr. Serra’s approach with all patients is to examine the area of complaint, but also to look “globally” to contributing influencing factors. Then, depending on the individual’s need, gentle chiropractic adjusting techniques for mobilization of spinal and extremity joints, cold laser for inflammation reduction and electrotherapies for spasm and trigger points are employed. Needle-less acupuncture with laser and piezo electric stimulation is often utilized for decreasing pain signals, stimulating analgesic response through the release of endorphins and other opioids and to modulate (regulate) the sensory and motor nerve activity (turn on or ramp down). His general goals are to decrease inflammation, increase joint mobility, decrease or resolve adhesions and scar tissue and to improve or resolve muscle motor inhibition (weakness) to enable sleep, work and recreational activities. Patients often ask, “Where did this scar tissue come from?” If you fall down and skin your knee, the healing process leaves you with a scab, which is scar tissue. If the tissues below the skin become injured, scar tissue forms much in the same way. It binds the tissues up, however, and restricts the range of motion until it tears and re-inflames, setting up a repetitive strain syndrome. The benefits of Soft Tissue Care, in particular, FDM however, transcend the musculoskeletal facet of one’s healthcare. Since the nervous system involves the body’s organs as well, an added benefit of functional rehabilitation may be that digestive disorders or other chronic issues that were seemingly unrelated become resolved.
Dr. Serra’s high school and college background in soccer, wrestling and track evolved into running and tennis. However, golf and circuit training are now the activities of choice, with fishing and kayaking as time allows. He has been active in the community, having served on a number of committees as well as elected to the Rockdale Board of Education. He is an active member of First Baptist Conyers and has led the Men’s Ministry and served as a deacon. Dr. Serra has been married for over 35 years and has two grown children. He is available to address your work, tennis/golf associations or church group on Repetitive Strain Injuries, Chronic Pain, including Prevention Measures.
